Notes from the Metropolis of Mars began as a book of algorithmically generated images from the Second-Rate Selfie Machine, a photobooth-like device I designed and programmed. All of the images were self portraits, because I was the available subject. I originally meant it to be a straightforward book of pictures.
As seems to happen with all my projects, the book began to take on the character of a fictional narrative, where the story itself remained unclear. Playing with the possibilities of the implied narrative, I added materials created but mostly unused from other projects over the years, like illustrations, photographs, text files, found graphics, and algorithmically generated images.
The result is Notes from the Metropolis of Mars, which takes its place alongside my earlier works Signal to Noise, Dry Reading, Mars Observations, OXIDE, and Explanations and Clarifications, all of which can be found on a bookshelf located somewhere in the Metropolis of Mars.
