Erich Nussbaumer: Artist Statement

For over sixty years, ever since I received my first camera from my father at the age of twelve, my worldview has been shaped through a lens. Today, as a fine art photographer, my work is dedicated to the timeless and expressive power of high-contrast monochrome.

My images are not meant to be documentary; they are a deliberate interpretation of reality. I am drawn to the emotional narrative and the inherent "feeling" of a scene rather than creating a literal, journalistic record. If a bright daytime sky feels more powerful and evocative when rendered as an inky, dramatic black expanse, I will shape the tones to match my vision simply because it serves the mood of the piece. By stripping away the distraction of color and unapologetically pushing the boundaries of light and deep shadow, I seek to distill my subjects to their purest essence—focusing entirely on structural geometry, stark contrast, and intricate textures.

While I travel extensively across Australia, my explorations also take me overseas. These international journeys provide not only striking new vistas, but an entirely different quality of light to capture. Whether I am framing the centuries-old architecture of an European city or the stark, weathered landscapes of the Australian outback, I find profound inspiration in the stories etched into both natural and built environments. I am deeply moved by the connection between the land and the history of those who have inhabited it. While my processing is highly creative and subjective, I do not rely on fabricated details or artificial elements. I honor the authentic foundation of what stood before my camera, using intense contrast to amplify its inherent dignity rather than changing its physical truth.

Ultimately, my black-and-white photography is a deeply personal reflection of the world as I feel it—a continuous journey to reveal the hidden narratives and stark beauty found in the extremes of our surroundings.
