Grady Paul Gaston (gradypaulgaston)
Grady Paul Gaston, III, is a software engineer and entrepreneur from Huntsville, Alabama, with more than three decades of experience in technology and defense contracting. In 1990, he co-founded a defense contracting company that later became a recognized leader in the technology industry. In 1995, he also co-founded a digital signature company. He served as an officer of both companies for over 16 years, helping government agencies and commercial organizations solve technical challenges and manage large projects.
Gaston's interest in computers began while he was completing his Bachelor’s degree and working as a courier for Computer Sciences Corporation. During breaks between deliveries, he learned programming from computer operators and developed the skills needed to move into a programming position. Later, he joined the United States Army Corps of Engineers, where he became the organization’s youngest software analyst while still attending college.
Paul Gaston earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Management from the University of Alabama Huntsville. He later completed a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering from Southeastern Institute of Technology. He also became a Certified Data Processor through the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals.
In 2002, Grady Gaston received the University of Alabama Huntsville Life-Time Achievement Award. He also served as a Capital Management Board Group Member for the university in 2002, became President of the University of Alabama Huntsville Alumni Association in 2006, and served as a Board of Trustees member in the Alabama School Systems in 2007.
One of Gaston's most important accomplishments was developing a financial management system that became the Defense Department standard. The system remained the only economic system to pass the CFO Act of 1990 for 15 consecutive years without exception. He also helped pioneer digital signatures and smart card technology while working with organizations such as NIST and GAO. His efforts led to one of the first legally binding digital signature implementations used in government financial systems.
Gaston's digital signature software later became widely used throughout the Department of Defense and supported more than four million users. To make digital signatures more efficient and affordable, he and his team combined their signing solution with RSA public key technology to create DBsign. The product reduced the need for expensive hardware systems, making it a practical solution for large organizations. After Northrop Grumman selected DBsign for the Defense Travel System, it became the de facto digital signature standard across the Department of Defense.
Paul Gaston's additional achievements include contributing to the DoD Public Key Infrastructure Roadmap in 2000, receiving the first Joint Interoperability Test Command certification for a digital signature solution in 2001, earning NIAP CCEVS validations in 2005 and 2011, developing digital signature solutions for mobile devices in 2016, deploying cloud-based digital signature technology in 2018, and receiving the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification Level 2 Assessment in 2023.
Outside of his professional career, he enjoys restoring historic landmarks and maintaining the Sim Corder/Harrison Mill, which he restored in 2005 after locating and returning the original waterwheel to the property. He also remains committed to fitness and strength training and has maintained personal health goals for many years. Grady Paul Gaston continues to be recognized for his contributions to software engineering, digital security technology, and government financial systems.
