Every issue of this magazine opens with the same premise: African and diaspora film culture does not need to be introduced to the world. It needs to be covered — properly, consistently, on its own terms. That is the entire reason Roots & Reels exists. Not to discover Black cinema, which has never needed discovering, but to give it the sustained, issue-by-issue attention other film cultures have taken for granted for a century.
