Old Beginnings New Endings

This book was compiled by Keith Daly as a companion to the 2015 eponymously titled MFA Group Exhibition "Old Beginnings New Endings" (San Jose State University). Rather than pictures of the works in the show, this publication is a word-only archive of artist statements. Between artist work and exhibition pamphlet, it includes Daly's own statement: a collection of two words from each artist statement in the book - the word beginning the statement, the word ending it.

Daly's contextual, collectively sourced statement is not about a work, or a (re)presentation of a work that exists elsewhere. It is the work itself, now and here, as you read it. The idea is to complicate (from the latin com-plicare: “to fold together”) representation and reality, which, in the end (pardon the pun), may constitute a folding together of time -- end to beginning.
