I moved to San Francisco in 1983 and the window display at Joe's Pharmacy looked old even then; except for further fading, peeling and mold, its yet abides. I began photographing it in 2000 and for the next few years would return to take new pictures of its pictures in the hopes of making a complete set of all of Robert Thom's Great Moments in Medicine. It was an enervating process - I wasn't always clear about my camerawork and pictorial strategy and it shows with some ham-fisted collage in between more inspired efforts - for I am proud to have swiped Vesalius' body, just as he probably did. Now, far away from my old streets, I think of it as more of a fan's book - of the window display at Joe's Pharmacy and its estimable continuity, as well as another chapter in a larger project called Language Photography and the Preservation of Beauty in my Neighborhood.
