Enid Crow's Happy Workers probes an essential contradiction: work can be frustrating, stressful, and alienating, but it can also be a source of pride, achievement, recognition, and a sense of self. In costumes she finds in thrift stores and on eBay, with wigs (she has 200), and artfully overstated make-up, she becomes characters inspired by all varieties of workers' commentaries about their jobs. Gently political, she uses humor and theatrical role-play to explore the cultural landscape of work: gender roles, status stratification, and the personal, social, and financial demands of hustling for a buck.
