At its core, agarwood is not a type of wood you can simply grow; it is a pathological product. It begins with the Aquilaria tree, a fast-growing evergreen native to Southeast Asia. In its healthy state, the wood is light-colored, odorless, and relatively low in value. The transformation occurs only when the tree is compromised. Whether through lightning strikes, insect boreholes, or fungal infections, the tree’s immune system responds by producing a dense, dark, fragrant resin. This resin saturates the wood, increasing its density until it can no longer float in water—hence the Chinese name Chen Xiang (sinking incense).
