Closing Stages Book 1 The Journey Begins

The sound of the music drifted through the hall, faintly, barely audible, like the whimpers of a small child trying to hide it's sobs. She knew what the sound meant, as her heart began to pound, and the sweat began to bead upon her forehead. He had returned. Perhaps she could escape, somehow force her terrified form to do more than tremble. Then she heard the faint, almost silent footsteps as they began their slither towards the small sanctuary of her room. Already she could sense the cold malice of the steps, of the tedious task for which was to come. Was it her heightened sense of terror for which she could now feel the ever-approaching hardened steel, or was it the barely audible clink of metal upon the wall? Her breath began to betray her, though she tried with all her might to keep it within. She closed her eyes as she heard the cruel twisting of the door handle, and felt the piercing shadow cutting through the darkness. She only prayed that it would come quickly...this time.
