Typical cameras use hardware and software filters to eliminate infrared light from the exposure spectrum and render scenes that conform to “normal” perception. Dobrow uses a modified Canon 5D mkII that does the opposite, filtering out visible light and capturing images in which dark leaves are white and bright skies are almost black. His photography, while “experimental” is not gimmicky, trivial, formulaic, or unintentional. Sam Dobrow’s years of experience in traditional photography, formal training in all of the visual arts, and a master’s command of Mr. Adams’ zones, make his images fit perfectly among the best museums’ examples of black-and-white landscape photography.
