Portrait of a City was born of a desire to create a collaborative portrait of Kansas City informed by the style and spirit of photographer Evelyn Hofer and her photobook projects of major metropolitan cities. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art presented Evelyn Hofer: Eyes on the City, the first major museum exhibition of her work in over fifty years, from September 16, 2023 through February 11, 2024. As a collaborative project between the museum, Kansas City Society for Contemporary Photography, and 49 area photographers, Portrait of a City brought together diverse perspectives to create a distinct and a compelling series of photographs.
