French artist-photographer and documentarian François Pugnet studies the lives, ordinary and extraordinary, of people still working long after they might have been expected to have retired and relaxed. Their motives range from economic imperatives, through preserving traditional, endangered or under-valued occupations and knowledge, to staying anchored amid the electronic tumult of the tech capitalism and media-swamped life in the 21st century. Each one of these workers makes a way authentically; none of them owes a living to anyone else's surplus value, to the whims of the stock market, or to a lifetime of lucky breaks. Each has an otherwise already interesting bio and each has decided that the story is not over.
