Formal aspects of music, notation and terminology, are explored and used in classroom music making. The music of the European settlers to America (pioneers,) and the African musical experience, are explored through song, dance, listening, and instrumental projects. The emphasis is on sociability, on the experience of the Europeans as they settled the North American continent, on music making that is communal and low tech. We have opportunities to do some song writing in the folk (storytelling) tradition. That is, we can make up songs about our own experiences.
