AS IS : A portrait of American artist Matthew Rose’s Paris atelier.

In the winter of 2015 I paid a visit to Matthew Rose’s Paris studio. Filled from top to bottom with books, cut up magazines, pots of glue and paint, projects begun on every surface and other works hung or pinned to the walls of this intimate workspace, here was a mind full and bursting with ideas that for this ex-pat artist could only be satisfied with the gorgeous anarchy of his collage making. His studio is yet another evolving and changing collage.

A Paris resident since 1992, Matthew moved to this space off rue Daguerre in the 14th arrondisement 1998, where he has gone on to make thousands of art works.

“My studio is a kitchen, and I’m cooking for thousands – at the same time,” he said before leaving me alone in his space to photograph what I came to realize was a living work of art.
