Road Work is a book of street photography from the 1970s and 1980s with 103 black and white photos and 29 color photos. New York City, the Bay Area, and Chinatown are featured prominently but other locales appear as well. As a Chinese American photographer, much of Soone's work can be seen through the lens of race and culture.

The book provides a compelling and authentic portrayal of city life. Soone's photographs often suggest larger narratives or stories through the captured gestures, expressions, and interactions of his subjects. His style of street photography embraces spontaneity, grit, candid moments, and visual storytelling to vividly document the energy and spirit of urban society during that era. By blending into the environment, he was able to capture the real, unstaged moments that linger beneath the surface.
