Jim O'Connell is a freelance photographer whose pictures and photo essays have appeared in The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune and other publications throughout the world.

The photos presented in this issue are from a two-year project he did in Kabukicho, the infamous red-light district of Tokyo. Far from the popular image of Japan, a relatively peaceful and crime free country, his project shows the darker, seamier side of the city.

Jim is represented by the Magnesium Agency. More information can be had at his web site, http://mmdc.net
