In this issue of Emboss, we celebrate our surroundings. The recycled art of Emma Balder and the insightful collages of Gemma Schiebe interrogate our impact on the environment and our indiscriminate waste. We celebrate the mysterious inner-workings of ourselves and other species in Jean Jacques Bastarache’s fantastical paintings, and explore the hybridity of human and landscape in the work of Melissa Huang. We discover the structure of organic forms in Kathy Taslitz’s site-specific sculptures, and celebrate moments of serenity in the paintings of Kylee Turunen. Nature has formed us as a species, and we have in-turn sculpted it. It is both our prerogative and responsibility to consciously decide the impact our presence will leave on the environment, and the health and well-being of future generations. We hope this issue urges you to reflect on your place in the universe, and as always, we hope you enjoy the art herein as much as we’ve enjoyed curating it for you.
