The photos in this book were taken on walks in America and Europe over the last several decades. Walking can be a slow, immersive and porous experience, filled with unexpected and wonderful revelations. It is a marvelous slow way to see the world, and to make photographs of what I have seen and discovered along the way. As Hippocrates said thousands of year ago, “Walking is man’s best medicine.”

I have always enjoyed walking. I was introduced to hiking at an early age by my parents in rural New England. Distances change when you see the world on foot. On foot everything seems and stays more directly connected. Walking does not have to be a passive act; walking can be a mode of exploration and discovery and a moving meditation. Many of my best thoughts and ideas are conceived while walking or while laying in bed late at night, trying to walk my way back to into the elusive vale of sleep.
