In 2016 burial site and mound protection laws came under fire in Wisconsin as owners of a gravel and quarry operation in the Madison Wisconsin area challenged legal protection of a burial mound site on their property. Initially, the legal challenge succeeded, but that decision was appealed to the Supreme Court in Wisconsin.
A conscious decision was made to photograph additional mound sites in Wisconsin and the surrounding region from 2017 to the present day. A nearly year long series of social media ‘Mound a Week’ posts helped lay the groundwork for the Enduring Earthwork Exhibit and this book.
The photographs shown here represent a very small fraction of the surviving mound sites in Wisconsin and surrounding area. There are many more locations to photograph, and my work on documenting these sites continue to this day.
