Human skin surface chemical cues comprise a complex mixture of compounds that mosquitoes use to locate and select their human host, based on inter- and intra-human variation in chemical profiles. The complexity of the skin surface matrix calls for advanced analytical techniques to enable separation and identification of biomarkers, which may be used as topical attractants and repellants in future mosquito vector control programmes. The perceived mosquito attractiveness between 20 volunteers and the preference of mosquitoes to bite certain regions, namely, ankle versus wrist, of the human host were investigated in this study, by comparing skin surface chemical profiles. Ion mobility was combined with high resolution mass spectrometry to provide additional confidence in biological marker discovery and identification of human skin surface compounds. This study employed a non-intrusive sampling scheme using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sampler and solvent desorption analysed with ultra-performance liquid chromat accurate mass values and adducts with their corresponding CCS values.ANME-1 archaea subsist on the very low energy of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Most marine sediments shift from net AOM in the sulfate methane transition zone (SMTZ) to methanogenesis in the methane zone (MZ) below it. In White Oak River estuarine sediments, ANME-1 comprised 99.5% of 16S rRNA genes from amplicons and 100% of 16S rRNA genes from metagenomes of the Methanomicrobia in the SMTZ and 99.9% and 98.3%, respectively, in the MZ. Each of the 16 ANME-1 OTUs (97% similarity) had peaks in the SMTZ that coincided with peaks of putative sulfate-reducing bacteria Desulfatiglans sp. and SEEP-SRB1. In the MZ, ANME-1, but none of the putative sulfate-reducing bacteria or cultured methanogens, increased with depth. Our meta-analysis of public data showed only ANME-1 expressed methanogenic genes during both net AOM and net methanogenesis in an enrichment culture. We conclude that ANME-1 perform AOM in the SMTZ and methanogenesis in the MZ of White Oak River sediments. This metabolic flexibility may expand habitable zones in extraterrestrial environments, since it enables greater energy yields in a fluctuating energetic landscape.To determine the efficacy and safety of a single injection with autologous bone marrow concentrate (BMC) combined with demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) compared to curettage and bone grafting for treating aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC). Two hundred thirty-nine patients were treated with curettage and bone grafting (Curettage Group), and 21 with percutaneous injection of DBM associated with autologous BMC and PRF (DBM + BMC + PRF Group). All patients attended the outpatient clinic to assess ABC healing and clinical results at the first 3, 6, 9 and 18 months after surgery and then annually in the absence of symptoms. The mean follow-up was 42 months for the Curettage Group (range 6-180 months) and 28 months for the DBM + BMC + PRF Group (range, 6-85 months). Out of the 21 patients who had injection with BMC, DBM, and PRF, 17 (80%) require no additional treatment and they were considered healed. Of the 239 patients treated with curettage and bone grafting after core needle or open biopsy, 177 (74%) were considered healed after the first treatment. Injection in comparison with curettage presented the same risk for local recurrence. The overall rate of local recurrence for all patients was 25%. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed a significant difference in local recurrence rates in patients younger than 15 years, and for the cyst located in the long bones of the lower limbs than the cyst located in the long bones of the upper limbs.
