Described in 1974 by Battacharyya and Connor, it is characterized by tendon and tuberous xanthomas and a propensity to premature coronary atherosclerosis. We present the first reported case of the disease being manifest in the periorbital region. A 44-year-old man presented with a six-month history of swelling below the left eyebrow overlying the orbital rim, but without displacement of the globe. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a soft tissue mass within the orbit, with subsequent biopsy confirming a xanthogranulomatous process consistent with the diagnosis of sitosterolemia. Management of sitosterolemia aims to reduce plasma plant sterol concentrations which subsequently lowers serum cholesterol reducing the xanthomas and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. This report highlights a rare, under-recognised condition (and indeed the first reporting periocular disease), and the potential dangers if misdiagnosed as hypercholesterolemia. Alcohol abuse can cause severe injury to human brain. Astrocytes are the most abundant nonneuronal cells that function to maintain the brain homeostasis. In present study, we aimed to investigate the role of ROCK2 in astrocytes exposed to alcohol. Astrocytes were transfected with lentivirus (LV)-anti-ROCK2 vector to downregulate the expression of ROCK2. The ROCK2 expression in mRNA and protein level was analyzed by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Cytokines or indicators involved in inflammation and oxidative stress were determined by assay kits. Proteins involved in nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome were analyzed by Western blotting. Alcohol exposure dramatically upregulated ROCK2 expression and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in astrocytes. On the contrary, transfecting with LV-anti-ROCK2 vector downregulated ROCK2 expression and LDH activity in astrocytes, demonstrating that downregulation of ROCK2 alleviated aljury. Lateral trunk flexion (LTF) is a common postural deformity in Parkinson's disease (PD). Postural control is known to depend on visual, vestibular, and somatosensory information. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between vestibular dysfunction and postural abnormalities in PD patients with LTF. We enrolled a total of 19 PD patients with LTF (PD-LTF+) and 19 age- and sex-matched PD patients without LTF (PD-LTF-). All patients underwent vestibular tests, including spontaneous nystagmus, gaze-evoked nystagmus, ocular movements, optokinetic eye test, fast positioning maneuvers, and the bithermal caloric test. Most of the PD-LTF + patients had abnormal vestibular function (11/19), while there were fewer vestibular function injuries in the control group (3/19). In PD-LTF + group, there were 5 patients (5/11, 45.5%) of peripheral vestibular dysfunction, 2 patients (2/11, 18.2%) of central vestibular damage, and 4 patients (4/11, 36.4%) of mixed injuries. The peripheral vestibular deficiencies could be either bilateral (4/9, 44.4%) or unilateral (5/9, 55.6%). The unilateral vestibular dysfunction was ipsilateral to the leaning side in 2 patients and contralateral to the leaning side in the other 3 patients.
