Sleep restriction increases energy expenditure, but also increases hunger, appetite, and food intake, causing positive energy balance, impacting appetite-regulating hormones, and leading to increased eating late at night. Insufficient sleep may lead to reduced physical activity and greater sedentary behaviors. In addition, short sleep duration is associated with reduced insulin sensitivity. The cumulative negative consequences of insufficient sleep increase risk for type 2 diabetes. Applications to clinical care, public policy, and future research are discussed. Insufficient sleep in adolescence increases risk for type 2 diabetes directly through impact on insulin sensitivity and indirectly through increased dietary intake, sedentary activity, and weight gain.A retrospective cohort study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of preemptive postsurgical therapy with cetuximab for patients with a major risk of recurrence or metastasis after clinical complete resection of primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The study period was from 2007 to 2019 for patients treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dokkyo Medical University School of Medicine. OSCC patients with major risk (n = 88) in the follow-up period were divided into groups with no postsurgical treatment (NP group), with standard postsurgical treatment (SP group), and with postsurgical treatment including cetuximab (CP group), and prognosis were compared among those groups. The 5-year overall survival rate was significantly higher in patients who received postsurgical treatment with cetuximab (CP) compared to that in the other two groups ((CP vs. NP, p = 0.028; CP vs. SP, p = 0.042). Furthermore, we performed multivariate analysis to evaluate the effects of the main components of the treatment. Among CDDP, radiotherapy, and cetuximab, only cetuximab significantly contributed to improved survival by univariate analysis (crude HR0.228, 95%CI0.05-0.968, p = 0.045). cetuximab also showed the same tendency in multivariate analysis, although p value did not reach significant level (Adjusted HR 0.233, 95%CI 0.053-1.028, p = 0.054). CPI-203 cell line The results suggest that the postsurgical treatment with cetuximab as a preemptive postsurgical therapy after complete surgical resection of a visible tumor is considerably effective for OSCC patients with major risk, in other words, invisible dormant metastasis.Ulva prolifera O.F. Müller (Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyta) is well known as a typical green-tide forming macroalga which has caused the world's largest macroalgal blooms in the Yellow Sea of China. In this study, two full-length γ-carbonic anhydrase (γ-CA) genes (UpγCA1 and UpγCA2) were cloned from U. prolifera. UpγCA1 has three conserved histidine residues, which act as an active site for binding a zinc metal ion. In UpγCA2, two of the three histidine residues were replaced by serine and arginine, respectively. The two γ-CA genes are clustered together with other γ-CAs in Chlorophyta with strong support value (100% bootstrap) in maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic tree. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis showed that stressful environmental conditions markedly inhibited transcription levels of these two γ-CA genes. Low pH value (pH 7.5) significantly increased transcription level of UpγCA2 not UpγCA1 at 12 h, whereas high pH value (pH 8.5) significantly inhibited the transcription of these two γ-CA genes at 6 h. These findings enhanced our understanding on transcriptional regulation of γ-CA genes in response to environmental factors in U. prolifera. The eukaryote genome is enriched by different types of repetitive DNA sequences and is most abundant in heterochromatin regions. Historically, no function has been assigned to these sequences, which makes them the target of studies that have demonstrated their structural and functional importance in the genome. Despite having a constant chromosome number, the genus Melipona has species
