Adelaide is a city and its capital, is the capital of South Australia. Adelaide was then controlled under the control of the federal government up to 1849 when a commission for city government was established. A municipal corporation was reinstated in 1852, and Adelaide received a lord mayorship in 1919.
The fertile surrounding plains, easy access to the Murray lowlands in the southeast and east, and the presence of minerals in hills nearby all contributed to the city's growth. As an early agricultural market center it dealt in wheat, wool, fruits and wine. Adelaide with its central position and a ready supply of raw materials It has since grown industrialized with factories manufacturing automobile components as well as machinery, textiles as well as chemicals. A petroleum refinery was completed in 1962 at Hallet Cove, south of Adelaide close to Port Noarlunga; a second refinery was built at Port Stanvac operated in the region until it closed in 2003.
