Nathan Michael Smith (nathanmichaelsmith)
Nathan Michael Smith is a businessman, farmer, and land developer based in North Dakota with more than two decades of experience in agriculture and real estate. He serves as President of Smith Farms, Ltd., and Managing Partner at Caliber, a development company focused on projects throughout the western United States. Over the years, Nathan Michael Smith has continued building on his family’s farming legacy, expanding Smith Farms from a small leased operation into a large agricultural business managing more than 30,000 acres.
Nathan was raised on his family’s grain and cattle ranch near Minot, North Dakota. From an early age, he learned the importance of hard work, responsibility, and maintaining strong relationships within the farming community. His father and grandfather played an important role in teaching him the daily demands of agriculture and the discipline required to operate a successful farm business. As he gained more experience, he gradually began leading larger areas of the operation.
Nathan attended North Dakota State University, where he earned a degree in Agricultural Economics. His interest in business started well before college. While still in high school, he began importing trucks from Canada for resale and later expanded into refurbishing and selling vehicles. At the same time, he explored other opportunities, including hauling gravel, reselling farm equipment, and purchasing residential properties for resale. These experiences helped him build practical business knowledge and identify opportunities for long-term growth.
Nathan took over Smith Farms in 1999 and grew the operation through strategic land acquisitions and strong partnerships with local landowners. Over the following years, the company expanded steadily as more acreage became available from retiring farmers and from the purchase of previously leased land. The operation later added farmland in Montana, further increasing its agricultural footprint. Along with expansion efforts, he focused on financial planning and risk management strategies designed to help reduce the impact of market fluctuations.
Nathan Michael Smith expanded his role in development further in 2024, becoming Managing Partner at Caliber. His responsibilities include analyzing economic trends, researching real estate opportunities, and helping guide investment decisions for development projects. Outside of business, he remains active in community and agricultural organizations. He serves on the Trinity Hospital Foundation board, participates in the Chamber of Commerce, and supports the Wheat Growers Association at both the state and national levels. Nathan Michael Smith also supports winter sports organizations and nonprofit initiatives while continuing to lead operations in agriculture and development.
