The scenic North Island is famous for its rich volcanic attractions, temperate rain forests, Maori culture, and larger urban areas. The majestic South Island contains a mountain range comparable to the European Alps, spectacular fjords to rival Norway, and ancient rain forests reminiscent of the Jurassic Age. With all this packed into an area the size of California, this far-flung country perhaps offers more than any other place on Earth of comparible size. We spent the better part of 3 weeks in the South Island and made our way around to some of the best spots. Here's an aerial view down the West Coast region of the South Island, with the snow-capped peaks and ridges that comprise the western extent of the Southern Alps. Like sunsets, beaches feature prominently in my collection of photos from New Zealand. There are literally thousands of incredible beaches all around New Zealand’s coastline, from the pure white sand of the far north to the black dunes of the Taranaki coastline, and every shade in between. This photo shows the incredible beach at Tolaga Bay on the north islands spectacular east cape. New Zealand Lakes The glacially fed waters of Lake Pukaki, within the South Island's Mackenzie Basin, stretch north towards Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand's tallest peak. Sitting just off the coast of the South Island in Tasman Bay, Rabbit Island is part of a recreational reserve that was established way back in 1908, thanks in part to its expansive swimming beaches. We really loved the North Island, but the South Island is spectacular for it’s own set of reasons. People are not wrong in telling others to spend time there. Then there is New Zealand's unique fauna such as the iconic kiwi, cheeky kea, and the mysterious tuatara which is the only species left in its genus. You cannot get a bad sunset in New Zealand, and with mountain ranges framing almost every photo, even a drive down the highway becomes a memorable scenic adventure.
