The development of malignant effusions such as ascites reflects a massive progression of a malignant disease. In patients with ovarian carcinoma, a high amount of ascites (>500 mL) is an independent negative prognostic marker. The composition and constituents of ascites reflect the inflammatory environment of the underlying tumor. Increased cellular resistance of ascites-derived tumor cells and the development of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) are major risks for these patients, especially in patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma. Cisplatinum In this study, we discuss the release of tissue factor-bearing extracellular vesicles (TF+ EVs) from tumor cells into the environment (ascites fluid) and their systemic spreading as a possible causal explanation of the pathologic coagulation status in these patients. We obtained ascites from patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma, collected during surgery or therapeutic paracentesis (n = 20). Larger ectosome-like EVs were isolated using sequential centrifugation, quantified We also show ex vivo that these larger ectosome-like EVs induce intracellular ERK phosphorylation and tumor cell migration, which is not directly related to their pro-coagulative potency, but might help to understand why cancer patients with thromboembolic events have a poorer prognosis. We evaluated the adhesion, friction characteristics, durability against bodily acids, sterilization, cleaning, and anti-reflection performance of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings formed as a surface treatment of intracorporeal medical devices. The major coefficients of friction during intubation in a living body in all environments were lower with DLC coatings than with black chrome plating. DLC demonstrated an adhesion of approximately 24 N, which is eight times stronger than that of black chrome plating. DLC-coated samples also showed significant stability without being damaged during acid immersion and high-pressure steam sterilization, as suggested by the results of durability tests. In addition, the coatings remained unpeeled in a usage environment, and there was no change in the anti-reflection performance of the DLC coatings. In summary, DLC coatings are useful for improving intracorporeal device surfaces and extending the lives of medical devices. The global impact of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clonal lineages on human and animal health continues, even considering the decreasing MRSA rates in some parts of the world [...].Cephalotaxus oliveri is a tertiary relict conifer endemic to China, regarded as a national second-level protected plant in China. This species has experienced severe changes in temperature and precipitation in the past millions of years, adapting well to harsh environments. In view of global climate change and its endangered conditions, it is crucial to study how it responds to changes in temperature and precipitation for its conservation work. In this study, single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and Illumina RNA sequencing were combined to generate the complete transcriptome of C. oliveri. Using the RNA-seq data to correct the SMRT sequencing data, the four tissues obtained 63,831 (root), 58,108 (stem), 33,013 (leaf) and 62,436 (male cone) full-length unigenes, with a N50 length of 2523, 3480, 3181, and 3267 bp, respectively. Additionally, 35,887, 11,306, 36,422, and 25,439 SSRs were detected for the male cone, leaf, root, and stem, respectively. The number of long non-coding RNAs predicted from the root was the largest (11,113), and the other tissues were 3408 (stem), 3193 (leaf), and 3107 (male cone), respectively. Functional annotation and enrichment analysis of tissue-specific expressed genes revealed the special roles in response to environmental stress and adaptability in the different four tissues. We also characterized the gene families and pathways related to abiotic factors. This work provides a comprehensive transcriptome resource for C. oliveri, and th
