The nicotine contained in tobacco is a neuromodulator which affects neurotransmission within the brain. The retina is an easy way to study central synaptic transmission dysfunctions in neuropsychiatric disorders. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of regular tobacco use on retinal function using pattern (PERG), flash (fERG) and multifocal (mfERG) electroretinogram (ERG). We recorded PERG, fERG and mfERG for 24 regular tobacco users and 30 healthy non-smoking subjects. The protocol was compliant with International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision standards. The amplitudes and peak times (PT) of P50, N95 waves (PERG), a-, b- and oscillatory potentials (fERG), and N1, P1, N2 (mfERG) were evaluated. Compared to non-smokers, the results (Mann-Whitney U test, Bonferroni correction) for tobacco users suggested a significant increase of ~ 1 ms in the PT of light-adapted 3.0 fERG b-wave (p = 0.002). Using mfERG, we observed the following increases in tobacco users in ring 3 for P1 PT of ~1,5 ms and in ring 5 for P1 PT of ~ 1 ms and for N2 PT of ~ 1 ms (p = 0.002, p = 0.002 and p = 0.006). It is our hypothesis that these results reflect the consequences of regular tobacco use on retinal synaptic transmission, and more specifically on dopaminergic and cholinergic transmission. We deduce that the retina may provide a crucial site of investigation for neurotransmission modulation of the reward circuit in regular tobacco users.Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD) is a newly proposed mental disorder characterized by excessive, vivid fantasy activity impairing functioning. BML-284 chemical structure There is a high comorbidity of MD with Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Symptoms (OCSS), yet the mechanisms responsible for this relationship are still unclear. The present study set out to explore the relationship between MD and OCSS by (1) examining dissociation, trauma, sense of control, and mind-wandering as potential mediators; (2) exploring whether MD is more strongly related to obsessions or compulsions; and (3) identifying patterns of specific obsessions and/or compulsions common in an MD sample. A group of 510 participants with self-identified MD completed a battery of online questionnaires. Dissociation and sense of control significantly mediated the MD-OCSS association. MD was moderately related to both obsessions and compulsions but was significantly more strongly related to the former. Frequently endorsed obsessions and compulsions among MD participants included checking and repetition compulsions, intrusive obsessions, and body-related obsessions and compulsions. We conclude that dissociative mechanisms, including dissociative absorption, play a major role in the relationship between MD and OCSS and may lead to consequent checking when transitioning back to reality, altered embodiment, intrusive images, and thoughts, and an impaired sense of mental control. Clinicians working with OCSS should be aware of the possible role of MD in the development or maintenance of symptoms. Future work should develop useful interventions for this type of shared psychopathology.Some narrow patterns of posttraumatic psychiatric comorbidity are well-established (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use). However, broad multi-diagnosis profiles of posttraumatic comorbidity are poorly characterized. The goal of the current study was to use latent class analysis (LCA) to identify profiles of posttraumatic psychopathology from 11 International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) diagnostic categories (e.g., stress, substance, depressive, psychosis, personality). Danish national registries were used to identify 166,539 individuals (median age = 41 years, range = 100) who experienced a traumatic event between 1994 and 2016 and were diagnosed with one or more mental disorders within 5 years. Two through 14-class LCA solutions were evaluated. A 13-class solution (a) provided the best fit, with the Bayes and Akaike Informatio
