Foam density affects scores. Clinical decision-making may be adversely affected if the clinician uses foam of a density that is not the same as that of the foam that was used in the studies that developed descriptive statistics, sensitivity, and specificity. Tricuspid valve (TV) regurgitation is the most common valvular pathology after orthotopic heart transplant (OHT). The number of transplants being performed is increasing with patients living longer after heart transplant. Data on TV surgery in OHT recipients is limited. We sought to analyze the outcomes of patients undergoing TV surgery from a large diverse, multicentric, nationwide cohort using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. A total of 42,766 TV repair or replacement (bioprosthetic and mechanical) involving adult patients (age ≥18 years) between 2007 and September 2015 were identified. Of these, 366 were performed in patients with OHT. TV repair was the most common surgery performed in both groups (OHT group and native heart group). Compared to the native group, patients with OHT had a significantly higher incidence of cardiogenic shock (20 vs. 11%, = 0.024), acute kidney injury (AKI) (59 vs. 30%, < 0.001), and AKI requiring hemodialysis (13 vs. Pirinixic cost 4%, < 0.001). Also, the mean length of stay for the index admission was significantly longer in the OHT group (27 vs. 17 days, = 0.008). The mortality rate was similar between the two groups (7 vs. 8%, = 0.753). The number of TV surgeries performed in OHT patients from 2007 to 2014 have remained stable ( = 0.803) compared to those in native heart patients which showed a significantly increasing trend ( = 0.019) during the same time period. Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), painless loss of central and/or peripheral vision, is a multifactorial disease caused by insufficient blood flow through the posterior ciliary arteries to the optic nerve head. Mutations in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase ( ) gene, triggering hyperhomocysteinemia as a consequence of a decreased activity of the codified enzyme, have been considered to be among the risk factors of NAION. The main aim was to study the association of the most common genetic polymorphisms C677T and A1298C with NAION in a Spanish population. In this case-control study, the association of the most common polymorphisms was investigated in 94 unrelated native Spanish patients diagnosed with NAION and 204 healthy controls. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms located in the gene, C677T (rs1801133) and A1298C (rs1801131), were analyzed by DNA sequencing and TaqMan assays. The allelic and genotypic frequencies of the variants obtained in the NAION group t cannot be ruled out that these mutations are relevant for the development of NAION in a subgroup of the population with other specific characteristics. These may include high plasma levels of homocysteine along with nutritional deficiencies including low folate or vitamin B12 and the combination of systemic and local risk factors. The MTHFR variants did not significantly increase the risk of suffering from NAION. However, considering that individuals with at least one of the risk variants have the MTHFR enzyme with decreased activity, it cannot be ruled out that these mutations are relevant for the development of NAION in a subgroup of the population with other specific characteristics.
