In April of 2020, I began photographing people sheltering in place. For the next 6 months, I zipped around the city’s empty freeways making environmental portraits of people I’ve met since arriving here 35 years ago. I photographed rabbis, rock stars, a deaf activist from Compton, a best-selling author, two Top Chef Masters TV personalities, the president of KCRW, the chair of Amnesty International, a homeless woman who lives on Ballona Creek, and dozens of other wonderfully interesting and diverse Angelenos. It’s been a beautiful and fulfilling experience, which I’m happy to share in my new book IN PLACE | PORTRAITS OF A PANDEMIC.
