Brionne, France, 25 August, 1944. Private G.R. MacDonald, of the Toronto Scottish Regiment (M.G.), giving first aid to an injured French boy. The little boy puting on a very brave face, but the little girl in pink seems scared enough for both. These young children probably don't remember France before the war, or were born after it started. They have never known real freedom, only Nazi occupation.

I added some symbolism while colouring this picture. I coloured the little boy in blue and the little girl in pink because I wanted to accentuate their youth. The top centre has someone wearing yellow, symbolizing the sun, sunny days and the bright future ahead. A child in green, symbolizing the return of life to the land. Green fields of grass and trees will soon replace the mud of war.

Pte. MacDonald is the consumate Canadian soldier, doing what Canadians do best. Helping other people ... and making our world a better place.
