At 5,157 acres, Portland's Forest Park is the largest urban forest in the United States. Portland’s Japanese Garden, which is contiguous with the wilderness park, is considered one of the finest in the world. This book traces a voyage of discovery that moves from the park to the garden and back again. Although there are some contrasts between the two places, as would be expected of a carefully designed garden and a park managed as wilderness forest, the big surprises were the similarities. The design of the book and conceptual approach to the subject question the nature of nature and highlight the interactions of humans with the natural world in the contexts of horticultural design and urban wilderness.
