Noise To Signal: Prince Edward Island

In May of 2010, we visited Prince Edward Island as the guests of friends who had just finished building a vacation home there.

I expected the landscape to be beautiful, but I wasn’t prepared for how obsessed I would become with the island’s red sandstone bones.

I spent hours wandering back and forth over a 100 meter stretch of rocky coastline near their house as the sun and clouds moved shadows around and revealed new shapes in the textures of the sandstone.

The beaches were equally beautiful. Windswept doesn’t quite do them justice; scoured and shaped is more like it. Some beaches were what most of us think of as normal sand colored; others were so red that it felt like we were walking on the surface of Mars.

Call this a love letter to an island I hope to spend more time with.
