The opening poem of our winter issue searches for "a poem that will save your life" by cutting to the core of the present, a core that holds beauty despite imminent loss. This issue grapples with loss and the attempt to grasp beauty and meaning in final moments, with the question of what remains when the present folds into an uncertain future. This loss and transformation holds a possibility of "something new and unheard of" in the future beyond the death of the present moment, a future envisioned sometimes as a dolphin child, the flight of birds, or in the recognition that the individual is "the mother bird and the egg and the nest."
