Multiple efforts over several centuries to establish a fine-wool breed, like Merino, in the British Isles failed due to the incompatibility of these types of sheep with any of the broad variety of environmental conditions. Finally, the late 20th and early 21st centuries saw two successes: the Bowmont, an experimental combination of Merino and Shetland from Scotland, and an Australian Superfine Merino flock. This document looks at the history of attempts from the 13th century on and talks a lot about micron (micrometer) counts.
