The tidal flats at Brewster are an extraordinary landscape. Low tide presents a flat area of sand that extends a mile out to the ocean’s edge and is at least five miles wide. The expansive view of sky and land this allows is not easily found at ground level in New England and provides a grand stage for the daily drama of sky and weather.

My pursuit of striped bass on these tidal flats, from before dawn until moonrise, in fog and rain or searing heat, has let me witness some remarkable sights.

This series began with taking photos for the purpose of making paintings of that experience, but I soon found what I could capture in a photograph more compelling than what I could represent in a painting.

Though interests have led me to other subjects, the moment has come to reconsider those images in anticipation of returning to this special place and looking anew.
