Caravaggio’s painting’s were never straight forward , his method of portraying the religious Mise en scene was revolutionary in its day . Out of the darkness he freezes time, his subjects as if a movie still , that continues to flicker in the dim light. We were inspired by Caravaggio’s genius of Chiaroscuro, and further by scorsese’s “Mean Streets” modern day cinema take on this, Ultimately, what we have re-created as a photograph could purely be seen as a fashion image by some , A deeper political meaning ? ,as well as the violence that was rife in Caravaggio’s life , these images are sacred and profane and there is a certain solidarity to the image in hard times everyone can relate too. There is a common theme that runs through these projects for us whether it be the Rockers or Natives imagery and again here with Caravaggio that we employ the same techniques of street casting and photograph the essential “Soul” of our subject .
