Hidari Maki means left wrapped or reversed from normal. Therefore, it is used to mean crazy.

So why the name? Our co-founder and editor Alister is often called this by Japanese born pastel artist Marbo Barnard, because what falls out of Alister’s camera is what’s kicking around his brain. So for a very brief moment these thoughts are brought to life and reality in front of the lens.

The very first issue of Hidari Maki will feature the photography and make-up of Alister (photographer) and Treja (make-up artist) our founders and editors. They both bring to the magazine a refreshing and somewhat left wrapped way of looking at the world through their work. As the publication moves forward a global representation of “left wrapped” works, artists, and fashion shall grace Hidari Maki’s pages.
