Judy L. Young (cookingwithjudy)

Cooking with Judy is a fun, interactive adventure into the world of healthy choices. I am not a dietician nor am I a certified teacher. I am a grandmother who knows how to stretch a dollar farther than anyone I know. And, I have spent the past 10 years researching what is good for us and what is not--allowing me to make healthier choices for myself.

You will learn how nutrition impacts your energy levels throughout the day. You will learn how to navigate the grocery store on a very limited budget and how to select fresh produce in order to prepare quick and nutritious meals.

I hated to cook when my children were small but loved to bake because that was not required. It was a luxury that I was quite good at. After all, I had grown up in a household where the daily staple was meat and potatoes. Dessert was an OCCASIONAL special treat. But by the time my little ones came along, the American culture had changed. We could buy ready-made cookies, pies, and cakes and keep them in our pantry for daily consumption. And, nobody's freezer was ever without plenty of ice cream.

By the time my girls were old enough to help in the kitchen, I was working full time. By the time they were grown: if it didn't come out of a box . . . I didn't know how to fix it. I, like everyone else, loved having so many choices for drive-thru on the way home. Instead of teaching my girls how to cook and buy fresh produce, I had taught them how to eat out as often as possible and hit the drive-thru at great-neck speed. So, I wonder how many other young women grew up the same way?

We all need to be more aware of what we are putting in our bodies. Today there is a great movement towards conscious living and that includes being conscious, not unconscious, when we are eating. Do you watch TV or simply "space out" when consuming food? Learning to live with intention and awareness will get you out of the fast-food lane in a hurry.
