Designing for Digital Distribution

MagCloud allows you to offer both print and digital versions of your publication with a single PDF upload. While you aren't required to do anything differently in the design of your PDF if you want to offer a digital version, if you do opt in for digital distribution you have the option of including hyperlinks in your PDF. Hyperlinks are supported across all of MagCloud's digital offramps: the MagCloud iPad Application, the MagCloud Web Viewer, and in PDF downloads. In the iPad application and the web viewer, your text links will be highlighted for users with a blue underline, while image links will have a blue box added around them.

How to Use Hyperlinks in Your Publication

Hyperlinks are a great way to make the digital version of your publication more interactive for readers, drive traffic from your publication to your website, or offer a feedback loop for advertisers. For example, you can link from your catalog of products back to an ecommerce site, or allow customers to draft emails to an address listed in your brochure just by clicking on it. If your publication contains external advertising, you can use hyperlinks to add value to your advertising space by allowing readers to click through to your advertisers’ websites.

How to Add Hyperlinks to Your PDF

If you are creating your PDF in Adobe InDesign, QuarkXpress or Apple Pages, you can add hyperlinks to your publication during the design process, when you are adding your image and text content to the document. If you are creating your PDF in any other program, like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher, you will need to add the hyperlinks after the PDF has been created, using a PDF editing program like Adobe Acrobat Pro or Apple Preview. To see step-by-step instructions for adding hyperlinks to your publication, select the name of the program you will be using from the menu above.
