The phone rang as I was driving to my doctor’s office. Because I was running a few minutes late, I was not surprised. However, when I saw the caller ID, I knew I had to answer the phone right away. Within a minute of my doctor telling me something I did not want to hear, his call was interrupted by another. I asked my doctor to hold, as the second caller was my radiologist, who, I would soon find out, was calling to confirm what my doctor was telling me.

“Trish, you have cancer,” my radiologist said.
