Tom Finke's images of contemporary urban Japan, "Silent Spaces," are unnerving. Their flat-light, diffuse focus, and de-populated spaces seem to document the month after every man, women, and child has simply disappeared. This is poetic, understated photography, not Weston's hyper-real black and white imagery. It is photography that is monochrome, meaning more than the absence of color. Its quiet rewards close attention.
